Governor Gary Herbert visited Southwest Technical College (Southwest Tech) in Cedar City, Utah today. Governor Herbert, Tami Pyfer (Utah Education Adviser), and members of the governor’s staff visited with members of Southwest Tech, Southern Utah University, and local community leaders to discuss technical education in Southern Utah. Southwest Tech President, Brennan Wood, shared with the Governor about the unique partnerships that the College is forming with other higher education institutions and local industries, including the dual enrollment efforts with SUU and the Utah Aerospace Pathway with MSC Aerospace. After his visit on the Southwest Tech campus, Governor Herbert met with several Southwest Tech aerospace graduates at the Cedar City Regional Airport and asked them about their educational experience and their current employment.
In response to the collaboration between SUU and Southwest Tech, Governor Herbert stated, “I’m impressed that you brought people together, the private sector as well as the public sector, and have two [higher education] institutions working together for some innovative new ideas and ways to do things better. It really is about a matter of how we spend the taxpayer dollars and get a better outcome… Thanks to all of you for your collaboration in working together, because I think this is a model that can be translated into other areas of need throughout the state and throughout the country.”
