One of Southwest Technical College’s guiding principles is “All ‘Hands-on’ Deck” which emphasizes the importance of a quality hands-on education. EMT students at Southwest Tech now have the opportunity to receive additional experience behind the wheel of a newly donated ambulance, thanks to the generous contribution of Gold Cross Ambulance.
Gail Goodman, Director of Health Professions, and Rachel Stewart, Emergency Medical Services Faculty Coordinator, accepted the donation from Gold Cross Ambulance on behalf of Southwest Tech. Stewart works directly with EMT students from teaching in the classroom to driving the ambulance while they perform realistic simulations in the back. According to Stewart, “The impact that this vehicle will have on students’ education is enormous. From using radios, assessing patients, loading them into the ambulance, and transporting them to a mock hospital gives an incredible experience for our students. Goodman agreed adding “This is a big deal for our EMT students to have these experiences and this will make a huge difference in their education.”
Gold Cross Ambulance Onboarding Specialist, Gene Moss, stated “We are glad that Southwest Tech can make use of everything we give and look forward to having a great working relationship.” Southwest Tech recognizes Gold Cross as a valuable partner in helping students gain hands-on experience both in the classroom and in the field.
The ambulance was recently wrapped with a brand-new Southwest Tech design and to be specifically designated as an educational vehicle. Adult and high school students can participate in the EMT program at Southwest Tech and it typically takes about three months to graduate. Those that wish to continue their education can participate in Southwest Tech’s Advanced EMT program. The Emergency Medical Services education at Southwest Tech is also planning on adding a paramedic program and fire academy this coming year.
